Vahan is a software package introduced in 2011 by National Informatics Centre and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for the creation of a complete computerized database of vehicle information available with Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and District Transport Offices (DTOs). Its functional modules include vehicle registration, vehicle fitness, taxation, permits and enforcement. To address State-specific requirements, Vahan is customized State-wise. The vehicular data of RTOs and DTOs is compiled in each State to create the State Register. The State Registers of all States are compiled at the national level to generate the National Register.

Some uses of the data generated by Vahan include instant access of vehicle information, better monitoring of inter-state revenue; checking duplication of registration; and linking to the insurance companies’ database.
