The Sanitation Components are Water Supply, Excreta Disposal and Personal Hygiene, Liquid Waste Management, Solid Waste Management, Home sanitation and Food Hygiene, Community Health and Environmental Hygiene. The salient features of Totally Sanitized Towns are the following : towns must be free of open defecation, elimination of manual scavenging, efficient drainage of waste water / storm water, recycling and reuse of treated waste water, collection & full and safe disposal of solid waste, sustainable services to the poor. In 2010, in a national ranking of 423 cities, Chandigarh stood first in sanitation. These cities were colour coded to indicate different levels of sanitation achieved. Cities coded red showed dangerously low sanitation standards.
